How It Works

1

Enter the original price

Type the regular, pre-discount price of the item.

2

Enter the discount percent

Add the percentage off advertised for the sale, such as 25%.

3

Add sales tax if needed

Optionally enter your sales tax rate to see the final out-the-door price you will actually pay.

A discount is a reduction from an item's original price, almost always shown as a percentage off. Knowing the real sale price — and how much you genuinely save — helps you compare deals and avoid being misled by big-sounding percentages on inflated list prices.

This calculator turns a "percent off" sticker into real numbers. Enter the original price and discount to see the sale price and your savings instantly, and add an optional sales tax rate to reveal the true final amount you will pay at the register or checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the amount saved, then subtract it from the original price. The sale price equals price × (1 − discount/100). A 25% discount on a $80 item gives a $20 saving and a $60 sale price.

How is sales tax applied to a discounted price?

Sales tax is normally charged on the discounted (sale) price, not the original price. This calculator multiplies the sale price by (1 + tax/100) to show the final price after tax. Leave the tax field at 0 to ignore it.

What does "you save" mean?

The amount you save is the difference between the original price and the sale price — the actual dollars taken off by the discount. It does not account for sales tax.

Can I work out the original price from a sale price?

This tool calculates forward from the original price to the sale price. To reverse it, divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100); for example, a $60 item at 25% off had an original price of 60 / 0.75 = $80.
