Sales tax is a percentage added to the price of goods and services at the point of sale, collected by the seller and passed on to the government. Because rates differ by state, county and city, the same purchase can carry very different tax depending on where it happens, which makes a quick calculator handy for shopping, budgeting and bookkeeping.
This calculator handles both directions. Add mode takes a pre-tax price and shows the tax and the final total you will pay at the register. Remove mode does the reverse: give it a tax-inclusive total and it backs out the original price and the tax portion — exactly what you need when working from a receipt or invoice that already includes tax.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal to get the tax amount, then add it to the price. For example, a $100 item at 8% tax has $8 of tax for a $108 total. The add-tax mode does this for you.
How do I remove sales tax from a total (reverse tax)?
Divide the tax-inclusive total by one plus the tax rate as a decimal to get the original price. For example, a $108 total at 8% gives $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100 before tax, with $8 of tax. The remove-tax mode performs this reverse calculation.
When would I use reverse sales tax?
Reverse mode is useful when you only have the final amount you paid and need to separate out the tax — for example for bookkeeping, expense reports, or to find an item’s shelf price from a tax-included receipt total.
What sales tax rate should I enter?
Use your combined state and local sales tax rate for the location of the sale. Rates vary widely by jurisdiction, so check the rate for the specific city or county where the purchase is made for an accurate result.
