How It Works

1

Enter the bill amount

Type the total amount on your check before tip.

2

Choose a tip percentage

Tap a quick preset like 15%, 18% or 20%, or type your own custom tip percentage.

3

Split between people

Set how many people are sharing the bill to see the tip and total owed per person.

A tip, or gratuity, is an amount added to a bill to reward service, most commonly in restaurants, bars, taxis and salons. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the bill, with the right percentage depending on the country, the venue and the quality of service you received.

This calculator removes the mental math of tipping. Enter your bill, pick a tip percentage (or use a quick preset), and instantly see the tip amount and total. When you are dining with friends, set the number of people and the calculator splits both the tip and the grand total evenly so everyone pays their fair share.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the tip amount calculated?

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is 50 × 20 / 100 = $10. The total bill is then the original amount plus the tip.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States the customary range for sit-down restaurant service is 15% to 20%, with 18% to 20% considered standard for good service. This calculator includes quick presets of 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25% so you can match local customs.

How does splitting the bill work?

The calculator divides the grand total (bill plus tip) by the number of people to give an equal amount owed per person, and also shows each person's share of just the tip.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides traditionally suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people simply tip on the full total for convenience. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount and the calculator will tip on that number.
