How It Works

1

Enter the trip distance

Type how far you are travelling and choose whether the distance is in miles or kilometers.

2

Set efficiency and price

Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency in your preferred units (MPG or L/100km) and the price you pay per gallon or per liter.

3

See the trip cost

The calculator shows the total fuel cost for the trip plus the fuel used and the cost per mile and per kilometer.

A fuel cost calculator tells you what a journey will actually cost to drive, which is useful for budgeting road trips, splitting costs with passengers, claiming mileage, or comparing driving against other transport. The only inputs you need are the distance, how efficient your vehicle is, and the current price of fuel.

Because fuel economy and prices are quoted differently around the world, this calculator lets you mix units: miles or kilometers, US or UK miles-per-gallon, km/L or L/100km, and price per gallon or per liter. It converts everything to a common basis, then reports the total trip cost along with the fuel used in liters and gallons and the cost per mile and per kilometer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What units does the fuel cost calculator support?

Distance can be entered in miles or kilometers, efficiency in MPG (US), MPG (UK), kilometers per liter or liters per 100 km, and price per US gallon or per liter. Everything is converted internally to a common basis so the units can be mixed freely.

How is the fuel cost worked out?

The calculator converts the distance to kilometers and the efficiency to liters per 100 km, multiplies them to find the liters of fuel used, then multiplies the liters by the price per liter to get the total cost. The price per gallon is converted to a per-liter price using the US gallon of 3.785 liters.

What is the difference between US MPG and UK MPG?

They use different gallons. A US gallon is about 3.785 liters and a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 liters, so the same car shows a higher miles-per-gallon figure in UK units. Pick the units that match the rating you have to keep the result accurate.

Can I use this for an electric or round trip?

It is designed for liquid fuel costs, so it works for petrol or diesel vehicles. For a round trip simply enter the total distance there and back, and the cost will reflect the full journey.
