Frequently Asked Questions
How is ideal body weight calculated?
Classic formulas set a base weight at 5 feet (152 cm) of height and add a fixed amount per inch above that. For example, the Robinson formula uses 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 ft for men, and 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch for women.
Why are there four different formulas?
The Hamwi (1964), Devine (1974), Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) formulas were developed at different times for different clinical purposes, so they give slightly different numbers. Showing all four, plus their average, gives a sensible range rather than a single value.
What is the healthy BMI weight range?
A BMI between 18.5 and 25 is widely considered healthy. This calculator converts that range into a weight range for your height, which often brackets the formula estimates and is useful as a broader target.
Should I aim for exactly this weight?
